The New York Mets lost their fourth straight game today, 7-2, as the Cincinatti Reds battered starter Nolan McLean and the Mets still couldn't hit.

Nolan McLean got lit up bad in this one as he had his second straight rough start. The Reds scored early and often, getting a pair of runs in the second inning, a single run in the third and four more in the fourth, and at that point manager Carlos Mendoza finally emerged from the dugout to rescue McLean and end his day.

The key hits were home runs, the first a solo shot by JJ Bleday in the third and the second another solo homer by Tyler Stephenson in the fourth. Spencer Steer also drove in a pair of runs with a groundout and a single, and McLean himself sent a run home with a wild pitch.

McLean wound up going just 3-1/2 innings, and his final line was ugly as he gave up seven earned runs on five hits and two walks. He did manage to strike out six as he got off to a good start, but he had trouble controlling his breaking ball, and it’s tough to pitch successfully anyway given the way the Mets are playing these days.

The Mets can barely afford to get down one run, much less seven, so the 7-0 tally on the scoreboard effectively ended this one. Marcus Semien finally got the Mets on the board with a solo homer against Reds starter Nick Lodolo in the seventh inning as Lodolo started to run out of gas. Lodolo had an uneven outing with his command, but shutting down the Mets isn’t exactly hard to do these days.

The Mets scored again in the seventh after a Brett Baty double as Carson Benge brought him home with a groundout, with that run scoring off reliever Brock Burke. That made it 7-2, but the Mets went quietly in the ninth against Graham Ashcroft, who was one of four Cincy relievers to pitch effectively.

The numbers were once again brutal in this one for the Mets. They lost their fourth in a row to drop back to ten games under .500, and they’ve now scored six runs in their last five games. They’ve also scored two runs or less in 24 of their 54 games so far this season, and McLean took the loss as he saw his ERA balloon to 4.40 after this start.

The series continues tomorrow as the Mets will use an opener to set up David Peterson, with Cincinnati ace Chase Burns on the mound for the Reds in what could be another mismatch.
