The New York Mets entered this season with an enormous payroll and huge expectations. All of the good vibes were immediately extinguished by an abysmal start and playoff contention has not been even a glimmer in their eye for a long, long time. As such, they were forced to be sellers at MLB’s trade deadline—evidenced by them sending pitchers Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta out of town.
New York entered Tuesday night’s action 20.5 games behind first place Atlanta in the National League East, but the SNY broadcast continued to sell the action with their pregame commentary. Some of which landed in an interesting place.
“They definitely shuffled, brought in the truck and took out all the garbage,” analyst Keith Hernandez said of the team’s actions over the last week or so.
Now, that is obviously a blunt way to put it. Hernandez likely did not mean to refer to the Mets’ traded players as “garbage” with his colorful commentary. And to his credit, he recognized how what he said could be construed and offered an apology before the first pitch was delivered.
“I said ‘got out the garbage,'” Hernandez said. “That’s a poor choice of words. I can’t believe that word came out of my mouth, so my apologies.”
That’s how you fix something right there. In this day and age it feels rare for someone to admit that they were wrong and attempt to immediately rectify it. But consider just how much good was done with one little sorry. Now everyone knows what Hernandez wanted to say and there doesn’t have to be a bunch of unnecessary drama spun out from the off-the-cuff comment. Almost like there’s a lesson there for everyone else.
