Mets' Carson Benge reveals why he shaved his mustache originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There's no one more superstitious than a baseball player.
New York Mets rookie outfielder Carson Benge is the latest example of that, and his mustache paid the price.
Benge was in a slump, and so he decided to go with the clean-shaven look.
It's not as drastic a change for some, because Benge's lighter hair color meant his mustache wasn't super prominent. But for him, it was a definite change.

And in his first game with a clean face, Benge notched two hits.
"I haven't really been getting a ton of hits," Benge told reporters on Wednesday night. "So I just shaved it off, and it worked."

Benge made the Mets' Opening Day roster as part of his MLB debut season, and he's been an everyday starter. He's definitely experienced some of the ups and downs that come through the course of a long baseball season.
Prior to Wednesday's game, Benge was 1 for his last 18.
But a 2-for-4 night with two RBI will have Benge feeling better about things.
Does it have anything to do with the mustache? Potentially psychologically, but even that is a stretch.
But if Benge thinks it matters, then it can matter in some level of his confidence or approach. Superstitions are a funny thing, and they're at full strength in the game of baseball. Benge will keep his face clean for as long as he keeps hitting.
