In what could be his final World Cup match, Lionel Messi lost.
Argentina came up short on Sunday, July 19 against Spain, falling 1-0 at MetLife Stadium. Messi did see the ball a few times, but he and his teammates were unable to capitalize on anything despite an otherworldly 10-plus save day from goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to keep them in it. Argentina had just one attempt on goal during the entire match, which spanned more than 125 minutes.
After the final whistle blew, Messi was silent. He stared into the distance, not saying much. He did rub his face momentarily and dished out hugs to the surrounding players, including Lamine Yamal, but he said nothing. The 39-year-old legend looked dazed.
