Two birdies in his first three holes saw Rory McIlroy take the first-round lead at a fog-delayed US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

The world number two, starting at the 10th, holed a 10-foot putt at the short but perilous 11th, and then followed that up from more than twice that distance at the par-five next.

Windy conditions, forecasted to become much worse in the afternoon, were obviously not a problem for the Northern Irishmen in the field as compatriot Graeme McDowell birdied the 10th and 11th to initially claim the outright lead before bogeying the 13th.

The 2010 champion, playing his first major in eight years having come through qualifying, sat in the group on one under with Sam Burns, former Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Andrew Novak.
