Sonya Whitman knew her math would be off a point here or there.
Cathedral Prep’s swimming coach tried to tabulate team scores from the Hallman Aquatics Center’s chaotic pool deck while she simultaneously assisted the Ramblers during their Jan. 26 dual vs. McDowell.
Whitman, though, still didn’t expect the overall results to be as snug as they were.
That augmented her relief when they were posted on the natatorium’s scoreboard.
The Ramblers edged the Trojans via a first-place sweep of the meet’s 400-yard freestyle relay finale. Prep’s boys won 98-88 and its girls with an even tighter 93-90 victory.
Whitman said it was the rivals’ most competitive dual over her five seasons in collective charge of Prep’s boys and girls.
“I put our best lineups in (Jan. 26),” Whitman said, “but (the difference) was there were certain kids who stepped up and played (supporting) roles they normally don’t. They dug in when it was needed.”
The meet left Prep’s boys at 6-0 atop Region 3’s standings and 8-0 overall. McDowell dropped to 3-1 in each category.
Prep’s girls moved to 6-0 atop the region and 6-1 overall. They also the Trojans (3-1, 3-1) their first loss.
The boys 400 free relay finale was particularly dramatic.
Although the Ramblers led the Trojans by four points, McDowell’s foursome of Alex Sebulak, Porter Austin, Ben Miller and anchor Owen Sarbak started as the top seeds. Flanking them were Prep’s Thomas Fortin, Andrew Dutchcot, Lochlain Snider-Mills and anchor Jackman Callaway.
The Ramblers not only won at 3 minutes, 20.76 seconds, but by more than one second less than the favored Trojans.
“That was a fun experience,” Callaway said. “I just felt a rush come into me when the crowd was yelling like that. That was a feeling I normally only get during the (District 10) meet.
“Yeah, this (win) was something special.”
Callaway also was an individual victor for Prep. The junior completed his two laps for the 100 butterfly at 53.23.
Fortin was another double winner for the Ramblers. The sophomore, besides his opening leg in the 400 free relay, also finished first for the 200 free race at 1:42.10.

Jaslene Cage was a four-event winner for Prep’s girls. Two of them were for the 200 individual medley (2:13.04) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.78).
McDowell’s girls lost despite Raelynn Schwab’s three wins. She finished first in the 50 free and 100 butterfly before she anchored the Trojans’ top 400 free relay quartet.
Deacon Pierce started legs for two of the McDowell boys’ relay victories. The senior also swept the 50 and 100 free sprints.
McDowell’s Kyla Quivey (226.15 points) and Prep’s Ted Terrizzi (244.75) were first for the meet’s one-meter diving session.
McDowell can avenge its Jan. 26 losses next month. The Trojans will host the Ramblers at McDowell Intermediate High School’s natatorium on Feb. 12.
McDowell also will host the diving portion of the district’s meet. The boys are scheduled there on Feb. 20 and the girls on Feb. 21.
All finals for the meet’s swimming events follow Feb. 27 and 28 at the S.P.I.R.E. Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
