The Cincinnati Bengals have been making some noise since the NFL draft that they might have selected Cashius Howell in the first round.
Those Bengals drafted Howell in the second round instead. And while teams say this type of thing about prospects they draft all the time, this time, it might not be much of an exaggeration.
After all, it’s apparently not just the Bengals.
When asked about his favorite value pick of Round 2, ESPN’s Matt Miller listed the Howell pick.
“Edge rusher Cashius Howell to the Bengals at No. 41. My No. 25 overall player, Howell slipped to Cincinnati, which will love his first-step quickness off the edge,” Miller wrote. “Edge is position of need after Trey Hendrickson left in free agency for Baltimore, and Howell's 11.5 sacks last season showed what he can provide.”
As we noted in our analysis of the Bengals drafting Howell, they left their comfort zone to get him, ignoring some longstanding history about measurements like arm length in the process, prioritizing his production. The opposite of Shemar Stewart last year, basically.
Whether that’s good or bad is hard to say right now and will eventually play out on the field. But the Bengals aren’t alone in considering Howell quite the value, if not steal, in Round 2.
