The Washington Nationals dropped the chance at securing the first three game win streak since June 30 - July 3 after dropping the opening game in the series against the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-2, at home on Monday night.
It also came at the hands of a familiar face after former Nationals star Max Scherzer took the mound for the Blue Jays, allowing one earned run and four hits while tossing four strikeouts on 75 pitches and 2.2 innings. Yet none of the 11 combined pitchers between the two teams threw for more strikeouts than Scherzer, giving him at least one more highlight inside Nationals Park.
Eddy Yean opened for Andrew Alvarez as the duo were responsible for all three runs through the first 6.2 innings before Paxton Schultz and Carson Palmquist closed out the game.
Luis Garcia Jr and Nasim Nunez accounted for half of Washington's hit after going 4-for-9 combined, while Garcia's RBI double in the bottom of the second inning opened the scoring in the series to give Washington a brief lead.
Andres Chaparro came in as a pinch hitter for Jose Tena in the bottom of the fifth inning, a move from Blake Butera that paid off after Chaparro took the first pitch 432 foot for a solo home run into left field. It also Chaparro's fifth home run of the month, including his first career pinch hit home run.
Washington nearly grabbed a lead in the first inning after CJ Abrams drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases, but it turned into nothing after Dylan Crews struck out then Daylen Lile grounded out to first base to end the frame.
That mattered as the Nationals managed just three hits over the final four innings in a one-run ball game. Washington appeared to have life in the bottom of the ninth inning after Nunez singled into center then James Wood walked to set up Luis Garcia Jr. with two outs, but it ended on a four-pitch at bat that materialized into his lone strikeout of the night -- and one of 13 as a team.
Jorbit Vivas accounted for three of Washington's 13 strikeouts in the loss, while the Nationals left nine on base and were 2-10 with runners in scoring position.
Washington will look to bounce back in game two on Tuesday night. Cade Cavalli is set to take the mound with first pitch set for 6:45 PM.
