TAMPA, Fla. – Officially, Max Fried's no-hitter ended in the press box, and it was the correct decision.

Fried lasted 7.2 innings and Yankees' reliever Fernando Cruz recorded the final four outs of Sunday afternoon's 4-0 win against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees' veteran left-hander was about to take a no-hitter into the eighth inning at Steinbrenner Field, with a pitch count at 92 and the Yanks leading 3-0.

But a scoring change was made on a one-out play in the bottom of the sixth, changing an error by Paul Goldschmidt into an infield hit for speedy rookie Chandler Simpson.

It became a moot point when Jake Mangum led off the eighth with a clean, line single to center off Fried, a made-to-order Yankees starter following Saturday night’s ninth inning collapse.

Closer Devin Williams handed back a four-run lead in Saturday's ninth, and the Yanks lost it in the 10th inning, 10-8.

Fried exited Sunday's game with two out in the eighth, carried by a standing ovation from the sellout crowd at the Yankees' spring training home and temporary home park for the Rays (due to Hurricane Milton's damage to Tropicana Field).

There were also two Yankees errors Sunday and a handful of terrific defensive plays, including one by Fried, a Gold Glove Award winner himself.

Fried had an early 1-0 lead, when Trent Grisham opened the game with a home run to right off Ryan Pepiot.

This was Grisham’s first time elevated to the leadoff spot as a Yankee, and there’s been some magic there with Ben Rice, Paul Goldschmidt mostly splitting time at leadoff.

But Rice was not in Sunday’s lineup, dealing with a bruised left elbow, though he was “feeling quite a bit better’’ than Saturday, according to manager Aaron Boone.

“Hopefully, it’s not too long,’’ said Boone of Rice, whose 1.003 OPS trails only Aaron Judge and Grisham on the Yankees.

Boone earned his first ejection in Sunday's top of the eighth, shortly after Aaron Judge's monstrous home-run distance fly ball was ruled foul and confirmed on replay.

When Judge was struck out looking in that at-bat by plate ump Adam Beck, Judge questioned the call and Boone got himself tossed by Beck. Boone then turned his ire toward third base ump Scott Barry, who made the initial foul call on Judge's bid for homer No. 8 this season.

Cody Bellinger drove in two runs Sunday, including a sixth inning solo homer off Pepiot.

Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera committed two more throwing errors, but a sixth inning fielding error by Goldschmidt at first base was eventually changed to a hit.

The groundball kicked off the glove of Goldschmidt, an above average defender, moving toward his right. However, Simpson would have beaten the play for an infield hit with Fried getting a late jump covering first.

And that was the explanation made after the scoring change, following several replay reviews by the official scorer.

The Rays' questionable baserunning continued Sunday, with Christopher Morel picked off second base by Fried to end the fourth inning and Danny Jansen getting doubled up at second base, trying to advance on Jake Mangum's fly ball to center to end the fifth - after another excellent catch in windy conditions by Grisham in center.

Austin Wells clubbed a solo homer in the ninth, and Cruz eventually finished the Yankees' second shutout of the Rays this weekend, taking three of four games.
