Mavericks predicted to snag No. 2 pick in latest 2026 NBA Mock Draft, land 6'6" 20.2 PPG NCAA superstar to become franchise cornerstone with Cooper Flagg originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
At last year’s trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks dealt Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis in hopes of increasing their odds of winning a championship. The opposite happened, but luckily for them, it netted them the top pick in the draft in Cooper Flagg.
This season, they were no better. They’re 25-55, and 13th in the West. In the latest NBA Mock Draft by Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, this bad record once again netted them a top pick, this time the No. 2, and has the Mavs landing Darryn Peterson out of the University of Kansas.

“Unless you all know something about Tankathon's simulations that we don't, another big lottery win for the Mavericks here should be free of any conspiracy talk. Instead, it's all celebrations as Dallas finds its first building block to slot alongside Cooper Flagg…With Flagg perhaps already on a superstar path, Dallas could quickly add another blue-chip prospect who has a non-zero chance of winding up on the same trajectory. Short-term, the Mavs could also benefit from Peterson's ability to fill an off-ball role, since this offense could run through Flagg and Kyrie Irving next season,” Buckley wrote.
With the Jayhawks, Peterson was averaging 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals in 29 minutes per game. He led them to the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament, and to the round of 32 in March Madness, where they were only beaten by a buzzer beater by St. John’s.

Landing Flagg and Peterson in back-to-back drafts would give the Mavs one of the best young wing duos since the Boston Celtics drafted Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum in 2016 and 2017. They would be the future for Dallas, and could open up a trade for Kyrie Irving for more assets to use for building around the duo.
Hopefully, the Mavericks do land this pick. It would be an electric duo to see in the NBA next season, and would right the wrong of trading Doncic.
