LOS ANGELES – The Dallas Mavericks released a statement Tuesday absolving themselves from allegations made by Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick of an incorrect MRI conducted on Austin Reaves.
“Our medical team followed standard imaging protocols based on the information provided at the time,” the Mavericks said. “There was no error in the scan performed.”
The statement, originally reported by DLLS Sports and confirmed by The Dallas Morning News, was in response to a recent claim made by Redick, who said the Mavericks’ medical team scanned the wrong area of Reaves’ ribs/oblique.
Reaves suffered the injury Thursday night in a blowout loss to Oklahoma City, the same game where Luka Doncic suffered a left hamstring strain. The Lakers shooting guard was administered two MRIs on Saturday in Dallas, which revealed a Grade 2 left oblique muscle injury.
Redick made the comments after the Lakers’ practice at SMU, one day before they suffered a 134-128 loss to the Mavericks on Sunday.
"The second [MRI] was today,” Redick said. “Again, I don't know where the chain of command lies with Dallas imaging, but they scanned the wrong area. Not on our end. We made it explicit what was supposed to be scanned but they scanned the wrong area."
The injuries to Reaves and Doncic left the Lakers without their primary and secondary options on offense, but LeBron James led their group with a near triple-double of 30 points, nine rebounds and 15 assists. Despite the vintage performance, it came second to Cooper Flagg’s phenomenal night of 45 points, eight rebounds and nine assists.
The rare win for the Mavericks marked the first win over the Lakers since Doncic was traded last season.
