The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly eyeing Duke head coach Jon Scheyer as they weigh up their next move after Jason Kidd.
Kidd’s exit is not a minor change. Dallas have parted ways with him after five seasons, making the next appointment a major decision for the franchise.
Scheyer is intriguing for obvious reasons. Yet the Mavericks cannot allow his Mike Krzyzewski connection to become the whole argument.
Jon Scheyer’s Coach K pedigree makes him an obvious name for Dallas to study

Scheyer is not just another college coach with a famous programme behind him. He is Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, a former Blue Devils player who won the 2010 national title under Krzyzewski.
That history matters because Duke did not hand him the programme by accident. Scheyer was named as Krzyzewski’s successor before taking over for the 2022-23 season.
Krzyzewski’s public backing also strengthened the handover. He said Scheyer was clearly ready for this opportunity, which explains why NBA teams would study him seriously.
Dallas must judge Scheyer on NBA fit, not Duke legacy
The danger for Dallas is letting pedigree do too much work. Scheyer has been shaped by one of college basketball’s defining figures, but the Mavericks job would ask different questions.
The NBA is not built around recruiting, campus culture, or long-term programme control. It is built around star management, professional pressure, roster limits, and immediate results.
That is why Scheyer would be an intriguing candidate rather than an obvious one. His Duke résumé opens the door, but it cannot answer every question Dallas need to ask.
There is also the practical issue. Duke and Scheyer agreed a two-year extension in October 2025, so this is not a clean or simple pursuit.
Dallas should absolutely be curious. But if they move beyond curiosity, the decision has to be about Scheyer’s NBA fit, not simply the shadow of Coach K.
