Newcastle United have officially confirmed the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach, ending days of speculation following Eddie Howe’s departure.
The 38-year-old arrives from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli after Newcastle described him as the “outstanding candidate” following a “thorough, rigorous and confidential recruitment process.” Jaissle is already with the squad at its training camp in La Manga ahead of the start of the 2026-27 season.
Speaking after his appointment was announced, Jaissle explained why he was convinced Newcastle was the right project.
“When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice,” Jaissle said. “The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be.”
The German also backed the direction the Magpies are taking despite a disastrous summer that has included the departures of Eddie Howe, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
“I am incredibly excited about the future,” Jaissle said. “I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking. There is a clear vision, strong leadership and an exceptional platform to build on.”
The new Newcastle boss also outlined the identity he wants his side to develop.
“My teams are built on togetherness, hard work and a passion to improve every single day,” Jaissle said. “I believe there is enormous potential within this squad and throughout this football club. I give my complete commitment and total energy to bringing further success to Newcastle.”
Chief executive David Hopkinson welcomed Jaissle by calling him “one of the most exciting and highly regarded young coaches in football,” while sporting director Ross Wilson said the German’s “leadership style and football philosophy are strongly aligned with our sporting vision,” adding that “his teams play high-energy football and we could feel his passion during all our discussions throughout the recruitment process.”
Jaissle now faces the challenge of rebuilding Newcastle ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with preseason fixtures still to come before the Magpies host Liverpool in their league opener on Aug. 23.
