The narrative surrounding Matthew Stafford's Hall of Fame candidacy changed in 2025. He went from being a fringe candidate to being almost a lock for Canton after winning his first MVP. Stafford's MVP campaign, paired with his Super Bowl win from the 2021 season, has put to bed any doubt regarding his Detroit Lions tenure, with the Lions' lack of success strictly coming from the decisions made by the coaching staff and front office during Stafford's time there.
As a result, Stafford has been feeling the love from the NFL for his incredible performance this past season, including two brilliant contests against the eventual-champion Seattle Seahawks. Thus, CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo named Stafford as a transcendent talent, placing him in the highest tier of his QB rankings.
"Stafford joined the elites by virtue of his MVP 2025 season," wrote DeArdo. "That award also just about solidified Stafford's future as a Hall of Famer. A second Super Bowl win would be another feather in his cap."
Stafford is joined in this tier with fellow MVPs Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, as well as superstar gunslinger Joe Burrow in the top tier.
Stafford led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns last year on his way to completing his 10th 4,000-plus passing yards season, his second such season with the Rams. Stafford also has the NFL's longest passing touchdown in 2025, an 88-yard strike to Tutu Atwell against the Indianapolis Colts.
