Yahoo Sports’ Matt Harmon guest-hosted on Check the Mic with Steve Palazzolo & Sam Monson, and he broke down what he likes about Luther Burden III heading into his sophomore season with the Chicago Bears. When it comes to receiver play, no one analyzes it better than Harmon with his Reception Perception methodology. It was a fantastic conversation, as he also touched on Rome Odunze and Chicago’s offense as a whole, so check out their show when you can, but here are some highlights.

In the clip below, Monson first points out that, despite some technical flaws as a wide receiver coming out of Missouri, Luther Burden is, in his mind, an elite athlete among elite athletes in the NFL:

“You turn on the tape and, ok, there are flaws, and there are some question marks, and some concerns, but he is one of those guys who visibly, immediately, just moves differently to everybody else.”

Harmon agreed with Monson that Burden has that kind of elite athletic ability, and he then went on to identify some of the flaws in Burden’s game tape from his college career. For example, he states that Burden struggled with zone coverage and that Burden would regularly run “into leverage,” and that would be it. His overarching point was that Burden has landed in the perfect spot with Ben Johnson and his offense, where his skill set and development can be maximized. He gives an NFL comp that I think most Bears fans will like: Jamison Williams. Pointing out that Jamison and Luther went to the same high school, Harmon sees the same kind of potential for Burden in a Ben Johnson offense.

“It was the right place to land…he really had some of those details, in terms of being in the right place at the right time against zone coverage, down.”

Harmon then went on to discuss the fact that Burden was already a good “man-beater” and that he can feature against man coverage out of the slot as the “Z” receiver. Finally, Harmon shared his thoughts on how Luther Burden and Rome Odunze would work as a receiving tandem:

“I think those guys are going to be an awesome, awesome tandem this year…Burden included, the fact that he is somebody who that, as you mentioned, with the ball in his hands, is special, and can also run routes and is learning those nuances as a zone beater…that is a pretty enticing package of players.”

I’m with Harmon on the massive upside of both Burden in year two of his NFL career and year two of the Ben Johnson offense, and Burden and Rome Odunze as a duo threat at wide receiver for the 2026 season. What do you think about Burden going into his sophomore season? Tell us in the comments below!
