According to media reports out of Terre Haute, Linton coach Matt Britton has informed his Miners he is leaving and expects to be named the next head boys basketball coach at Bloomington North.

Britton, a Bloomfield grad, returned to his hometown in 2011 to take over the boys team and led them to a 26-4 record and the 2016 Class 1A title game, where the Cardinals fell to Liberty Christian.

Britton is 299-128 in 17 years. His first head coaching job was at West Washington in 2004-05, going 6-15. He then went to Illinois, taking over at Effingham St. Anthony from 2007-10, going 67-22. He re-emerged in Indiana at South Spencer in 2010-11 to go 11-12 and was hired the next year to take over at Bloomfield and hasn't had a losing season since.
Britton went back to South Spencer for four seasons, then came back to Greene County in 2023 to take over for Joey Hart at Linton, where he was 64-17 while taking the Miners to regional titles the past two seasons. Over the last eight seasons, Britton's teams are 169-37, winning 18 games or more each season, peaking at 25 last year.
Britton played at Bloomfield under Ron McBride before heading to the University of Indianapolis. His 1996-97 team under Royce Waltman went 23-5 and was ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II and was inducted to the school's hall of fame.
Britton transferred to Eastern Illinois for his last two years. He averaged 16 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.1 steals as a senior to help the Panthers win the Ohio Valley Conference and reach the 2001 NCAA Tournament where they played eventual national runner-up Arizona.
Britton will replace Jason Speer, who resigned as coach and assistant athletic director in early June.
Neither Linton athletic director Vanessa Shafford nor North AD Andy Hodson could be reached for comment.
The Cougars should have a strong returning cast with four starters, Derrick Cross, Levi Lindeman, Tevin Bridgwaters and Nate Walker all seniors this year.
The next MCCSC board meeting is set for July 28. North is also expected to have Justin Helmer take over the boys cross country program with the retirement of Charlie Warthan. Helmer currently coaches girls cross country and is head coach for both track teams.
Bloomington South also has its pick for girls cross country head coach ready for approval, but both head coaching positions for track are still open.
