PHILADELPHIA — Matheus Cunha is making Carlo Ancelotti look awfully smart.
In the 23rd minute of Brazil's Group C match vs. Haiti Cunha cleaned up some trash off a rebound from an initial save from Vinicius Junior's shot and deflected it back into the back of the net to put the Seleção up 1-0.
The Manchester United forward then added a second goal just a few minutes later off a pass from Vini Jr., a shot from Cunha that he buried into the top left corner of the net for the no-doubter.
The brace for Cunha forward comes after Ancelotti added him to Brazil's starting lineup for Friday's game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia in favor of Igor Thiago, who started the team's opening draw against Morocco. They are also the first two goals scored by Cunha at the World Cup.
His first score came off an initial Haiti turnover at the middle, where Cunha received the ball before playing out wide to Vinicius, who cut inside for a shot.
His second started with Lucas Paqueta winning possession of the ball at midfield and quickly moving it forward to Vinicius, who pushed the ball through to Cunha.
Friday's game is an important one for both teams, but especially Brazil, which is coming off a lackluster 1-1 draw against Morocco in its World Cup opener. Should Brazil walk off with a win against Haiti on Friday, it will put them at the top of the Group C standings with Morocco going into its final group stage game against Scotland next week in Miami.
