Seventy-two-hole, stroke-play golf tournaments like the Masters typically have a cut that reduces the size of the field after 36 holes, but tournaments often use different criteria to determine who gets to play in the third and fourth rounds.

The number of golfers who make the cut and play in the third and fourth rounds is not pre-determined at the 2025 Masters. However, while 95 golfers began their quest for the green jacket on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club, that number will be reduced to players who are in the top 50 positions on the leaderboard, including those golfers who are tied for 50th or better, at the conclusion of the second round.

Masters tournaments played before 1957 were held without a cut. The Masters introduced a 36-hole cut in 1957, and it reduced the third and fourth-round fields to only the low 40 players.

In 1962, the 36-hole cut changed to the low 44 players and those within 10 strokes of the leader, but in 2013 it changed again to the low 50 and ties, along with those players within 10 strokes of the lead. Then, prior to the 2020 Masters, the 10-shot rule was eliminated, and the cut was changed to its current format, low 50 and ties.
