LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — In the MHSAA’s district 155, Mason defeated Charlotte 56-20 to claim the district title.

To earn a spot in the district final Mason defeated Lansing Sexton in the semifinal, with Charlotte defeating Waverly.

Mason coaches and wrestlers say they weren’t satisfied in last year’s district round falling short to Fowlerville, and made it a point to come back stronger this season, spearheaded by their 12 seniors.

“We’re led by our seniors,” said Mason wrestling coach Brian Martel. “We’ve got just an outstanding senior group and we’ve had our share of injuries and that kind of thing and just kids stepping up all over our team says a lot about their heart.”

One of those 12 seniors includes Jordan Evans, who wrestles at 120 pounds and says that while the seniors may lead, he feels his team is stacked across the board.

“We’re spread out all over the place,” said Evans. “I mean we’re ranked all over but we all trust each other and I think that’s what really pushed us further this year.”

Evans added that Mason will have to continue to pick up bonus points and not give up bonus points in the process, which will be crucial as the Bulldogs prepare for regionals.

“The regional is as stacked in the state as it’s going to get,” said Martel. “We’ve seen all the teams. Portland, Eaton Rapids, Fowlerville, and us, and it’s all top-15 ranked teams. We’re geared up and we’re looking forward to it,” Martel continued. “We’ve got a little bit of redemption, I think. Took a loss to Portland, took a loss to Eaton Rapids, so we’re looking forward to getting back on the mat against those guys.”
