Marta Suarez’s only 3-pointer of the night came at the perfect time on Wednesday.
Suarez, with the Horned Frogs down by two points in the final seconds, caught a pass at the top of the key. She jabbed once and then pulled up to drain a perfect shot as the buzzer sounded, which lifted No. 10 TCU to a 51-50 win over West Virginia. Naturally, that sparked a huge celebration at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
TCU, after taking a six point lead into the break, managed just nine points as a team in the third period to let the Mountaineers back into the game. West Virginia pulled ahead by three points after Jordan Harrison hit a 3-pointer, too, and then pushed that lead back to two points after a Harrison free throw followed a pair from the stripe from Donovyn Hunter.
That set up Suarez’s final shot, which allowed the Horned Frogs to head back to Fort Worth with a third straight win.
Olivia Miles led TCU with 14 points and six rebounds after she went 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Suarez added 11 points and nine rebounds, but went just 1-of-6 from the 3-point line. They were the only two Horned Frogs players to hit double figures.
Harrison led West Virginia with 19 points, and Gia Cooke added 10 points and five rebounds. The Mountaineers, who sit at 14-4 on the season, went just 1-of-8 from the 3-point line as a group. West Virginia has now lost two of its last three, though is fresh off an upset win over then-No. 11 Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum last week.
The win pushed TCU to 17-1 on the season, and 5-1 in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs’ only loss of the season came at Utah in overtime earlier this month. They’ll host Arizona next on Saturday before taking on No. 14 Ohio State on Monday.
