Marquette University alumnus Emery Lehman won his second career Olympic medal Tuesday, Feb. 17, winning silver with Team USA in the "team pursuit" speed skating event at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium in Milan, Italy.
USA finished in 3:43.71, well off the pace of host country Italy (3:39.20). The head-to-head competition featured a series of qualifying runs, then a semifinal win over China to reach the gold-medal pairing. Lehman was paired with Ethan Cepuran and Casey Dawson, and all three were part of the team that won bronze at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
Lehman, a native of Illinois who lives in Utah, will also compete in the 1,500 meters on Feb. 19, an event featureing favorite Jordan Stolz of Kewaskum. Lehman graduated from Marquette's Opus College of Engineering in 2020.
The team pursuit event features three skaters from each team racing at the same time over eight laps. In past years, skaters have taken turns in the lead, but the United States adapted a NASCAR style called "bump drafting" that has shifted event strategy – a move since adopted by other nations. The United States used the technique in the 2022 games, and Lehman is part of the crew that set a world record in 2021.
Lehman, 29, has appeared in four Winter Olympics. He also won team-pursuit gold at the World Single Distances Championships in 2025 and back-to-back golds in the Four Continents Championships.
