SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – After a dramatic one-point victory over top-seeded Randolph-Macon College to claim the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship, the Roanoke College men’s basketball team is headed back to the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament for the second your in a row.
The Maroons are set to open play on March 6 against Rhodes in the first round.
Senior guard Marcus Morgan said the opportunity to return to the tournament, and travel means a lot to him and his teammates. “I haven’t been to Georgia in a long time, so I’m excited to travel. I’m excited to be a part of the tournament again and have that kind of emotional roller coaster. I think last year was a good opportunity to see that emotional roller coaster. You know, UNC, Fifer, the Catholic game, even though we lost that one, it was still an emotional roller coaster. Just because I think basketball itself is such a beautiful game. And so to be able to play that for one more time in a postseason like this, in a tournament like this is amazing.”
“We’ve been in many different situations that we know how to handle adversity, ” said Senior forward Patrick Clevenger who emphasized the growth and resilience his squad has developed.
“We know how to handle it when we’re up. So those many different experiences play a key big role for us, especially this time around. We want to make an extremely long run this year,” added Clevenger
Head coach Clay Nunley reflected on the whirlwind of the season and the significance of competing in the national tournament. “Things are going at a fast pace and you’re always worrying about the next thing, but yet trying to be mindful of just stop and and taking a second to appreciate, appreciate coaching the kids that are in the program,” says.
Appreciate moments like this where you’re getting a chance to go play in the NCAA tournament. It’s not promised to anybody. And so it’s a cool experience. And you just, you know, you just want to be present.”
The Maroons will travel south for their game against Rhodes, setting the stage for what they hope will be another memorable March run.
