For the first time since April 13, the Miami Marlins are above .500, at 39-38 after beating the San Francisco Giants 6-3 on Saturday.
With the win, the Marlins have won their third straight home series in June. So far this month, the Marlins have only lost one series.
The Giants had opportunities in the game but failed to capitalize on them, stranding nine runners.
The Marlins managed to grab the lead early twice in the game, but the Giants answered with runs of their own. A four-run fourth inning, however, proved to be the turning point.
Miami took the lead for the final time after San Francisco tied the game in the top half of the fourth inning, pushing four runs across the plate in the bottom half of the fourth to take control. From there, the Marlins never looked back.
Giants starter Trevor McDonald was charged with the loss after being chased from the game in the fourth inning, dropping his record to 2-5 with a 4.93 ERA on the season.
McDonald threw 69 pitches, 38 of them for strikes, and allowed three hits and five runs, though only three were earned. He walked three batters and struck out one.
Max Meyer struggled at times but battled through to earn his eighth win of the season. Meyer remains undefeated and has yet to record a loss this year. With the win, Meyer passes Dontrelle Willis in franchise history for the best start to a season, improving to 8-0. Willis won his first seven decisions during the 2005 season.
Meyer threw 98 pitches in the game, 66 of them for strikes, while allowing seven hits and two earned runs. He struck out seven and walked two batters. If Meyer is going to make up ground and climb toward the top of the Cy Young race, he'll need to find a way to work deeper into games.
The bullpen took over in the sixth inning and shut the door from there on the Giants' comeback. Over there four innings of work, Miami relievers allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out five.
Pete Fairbanks recorded his fifth save in the month of June and his 11th save of the season after sitting down the Giants in order in the ninth inning. Fairbanks threw 15 pitches, 11 for strikes, while striking out two batters.
Offensively, the Marlins managed just six hits but drew five walks while striking out just four times. It wasn't the explosive performance fans may have hoped for, but it was more than enough to win the game.
Heriberto Hernandez had his seventh home run of the season while Otto Lopez became the first player this season to record 100 hits. Hernandez led the Marlins with two RBIs, raising his season total to 28. Owen Caissie added his 40th RBI and Jakob Marsee added his 19th in the victory.
The Marlins head into Sunday with the series already secured following Saturday's win and will be looking to complete their third series sweep of June.
