The Miami Marlins will look to avoid being swept on the road by the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves on Thursday in Atlanta.
Should the Marlins (58-57) fall again to Atlanta, they will return home on Friday back at .500, and further behind in a wild-card race where Arizona, Philadelphia, and San Diego are creating separation from the pack after upgrading during the MLB Trade Deadline.
The Marlins fell to the Braves 4-1 on Wednesday despite a solid performance by RHP Eury Pérez, who while having surrendered four earned runs on seven hits, also struck out nine batters through five innings.
“I think this is a team that knows me very well, and they were attacking all the time with the fastballs,” Pérez told reporters on Wednesday via Marlins interpreter Luis Dorante Jr. “I was just attacking the zone and I feel they were very prepared, and I think I did my job.”
The Fish are set to face LHP Martin Pérez, a veteran hurler who is known for his slider. The 35-year-old enters Thursday’s matchup having used his slider 34 percent of the time this season.
Fortunately, the Marlins are adept at facing the slider. Miami hitters have collected more hits (134) off sliders than any other team in the Major Leagues, except the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have as many. Marlins s shortstop Otto Lopez leads MLB with 28 hits off of sliders (.346 AVG) while 1B/OF Kyle Stowers paces Miami with four home runs off of sliders.
RHP Janson Junk is set to make his 16th start of the season for the Marlins. He will take on the Braves for the third time in his career. He struggled in his previous two starts against the Braves, posting an 8.10 ERA, including giving up eight runs in his most recent outing against Atlanta on May 20.
Junk earned the win in his last start after holding the New York Mets to one unearned run over five innings in a Miami win on July 31. He owns a 4.50 career ERA in 10 career appearances against NL East rivals.
Lopez enters Thursday’s contest with the best batting average among qualified batters against southpaws (.377). He also leads MLB in hits (142) and doubles (29).
Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards has collected base hits in his last six games against Atlanta. He leads the Marlins offense with 35 hits in 33 career games against the Braves, with a .304 average that trails only outfielder Jakob Marsee (.314).
According to Baseball America's August update, the Marlins added to their total of prospects in the Top 100 list. The Marlins are tied for the third most prospects in the Top 100, trailing only the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers, two teams who seem destined to face each other in the World Series.
Although injured, left-handed pitchers Thomas White (No. 32) and Robby Snelling (No. 42) still lead the Fish. Other top Marlins prospects include SS Aiva Arquette (No. 49), OF Cam Cannarella (No. 62), RHP Karson Milbrandt (No. 65) and SS Jacob Lombard (No. 66), who homered in his professional debut on Tuesday in Single-A Jupiter.
