The Miami Marlins completed the best June in the franchise’s 33-year history with a bang.
The Fighting Fish became the first team in Major League Baseball this season to win 20 games in a single month by knocking in 21 hits and defeating the Colorado Rockies 14-3 on Tuesday in Denver.
“It’s always great when the boys can get on the board like this and kind of take some pressure off of the pitcher,” Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards said after the game.
The game was batting practice for the Marlins from the very beginning. Both Edwards and Griffin Conine collected four hits, including each batter knocking in a double.
Kyle Stowers and Javier Sanoja each knocked in three hits for the Marlins. Stowers was only a home run short of a cycle after knocking in a single, a double, and a triple. Sanoja hit a three-run home run in the third inning to blow the game open.
Joe Mack hit the fifth home run of his rookie season in the seventh inning to make it a 10-1 game for the Marlins. Owen Caissie later followed up with his 10th home run of the season to put Miami up 13-2 in the eighth inning.
Eury Perez allowed only a solo home run by Mickey Moniak in the first inning and finished with eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Marlins became the first team to enter a calendar month eight games under .500 but end it six games over .500. Miami ended May tied for last place in the National League East after being swept by the New York Mets. After going 20-6, the Marlins are tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the third NL Wild Card spot.
“We played really good baseball this month,” Edwards said. “I’m hoping for many more months so that we don’t have to just remember this one.”
The Marlins have outscored opponents 129-78 during June and are threatening the top teams in the league despite having the lowest competitive balance tax payroll in MLB. And that’s after shedding the dead weight of Chris Paddack ($4 million) and Christopher Morel ($2M).
Edwards was a part of the Marlins, the last playoff team in 2023. Since then, Miami has changed in the front office and thus in the roster. However, the rebuild turned out to be a quick process, and with Edwards leading the way, a new playoff run could be on the horizon.
“We’re a pretty young bunch with some sprinkles of veterans on our team,” Edwards said. “Really fun coming to the yard with this group and definitely enjoying our time together.”
The Marlins will look to start July with a sweep over the Rockies on Wednesday. Max Meyer (9-0, 2.60 ERA) will continue to make his case for the MLB All-Star Game while the Rockies will send Denver native Kyle Freeland (1-7, 7.50 ERA) in an effort to salvage the series.
