The Miami Marlins won the series over the Los Angeles Angels but it may have cost them one of their key bats.
One week after trading away another.
Kyle Stowers, in the midst of a 2-for-4 day with a triple and two RBIs, left Miami’s 12-9 win over the Angels with what was described as “left hamstring discomfort.” He already missed time this season for a right hamstring.
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said after Sunday’s game that Stowers was sent for “some further examination to try to get a better handle on the potential severity of that.”
“Anytime you have to leave the game [limping] on your own power like that, not great,” McCullough said. “I think we’ll hold out a little bit and see what more information we can get.”
Had Liam Hicks not been traded at the deadline, he would be the logical replacement for Stowers at first base. However, both he, and Connor Norby, were traded for prospects and a bullpen arm.
Fearing the worst, the Marlins need to either find their 1B solution internally or call up a prospect from Triple-A Jacksonville. The internal solution would be to move Griffin Conine to first base.
Much like his father, Conine has some experience playing first base, although limited. Conine has been primarily an outfielder, much like Stowers, and has only played two games in the big leagues at 1B. He has tried the position out in spring training and said he is open to moving there.
“I played there a little bit,” Conine said. “I think it’s an option for sure. I’ll be ready to get out there if I need to be.”
There are also plenty of options in Jacksonville, should the Marlins go that route. Deyvison De Los Santos hit a three-run homer during the Jumbo Shrimp’s 4-0 win over Gwinnett on Sunday and has been one of their best hitters, with 14 bombs, 56 RBI, 16 stolen bases and an .802 OPS. He was called up much earlier in the season and would be deserving of a full shot.
The Marlins could also call up No. 14 prospect Jonathon Long, whom they acquired from the Chicago Cubs for RHP Braxton Garrett. Long (.286 BA, 12 HR, 62 RBI) was one of Triple-A Iowa’s best hitters before the trade and has since knocked in five hits in five games with the Jumbo Shrimp.
The Marlins are also considering moving Agustin Ramirez to 1B, considering he has played a handful of games during his time as a New York Yankees prospect. The Marlins called him back up from Triple-A as a replacement for Hicks with the hope of him returning to form from last year, when he hit 21 home runs as a rookie.
