NEW YORK — Mark Vientos exited the Mets' game against the Royals on Thursday afternoon after taking a sinker from Michael Wacha off the right hand during his at-bat against Michael Wacha.
Vientos remained in the game to run the bases but was removed at the top of the next half inning, setting off a chain reaction in the field that sent A.J. Ewing to second base for the second time in his major league career.
Tyrone Taylor entered the game in Vientos' spot in the lineup.
Andy Green said before the game that Francisco Lindor and Jorge Polanco, who were receiving off days in their ramp-ups back from the injured list, were both available off the bench. But the timing of Vientos' injury could have led Green to alter his lineup more conservatively.
Vientos started the game at third base for only the second time this season. The 26-year-old has largely settled into a platoon role this season, spending most of his time at first base and designated hitter. He is slashing .211/.256/.388 with 11 home runs, 35 RBI and 25 runs while striking out 61 times in 73 games.
Ewing was seen taking reps at second base before Thursday's action. All 49 of his starts this season have come in center field, but he made four starts at second base in Double-A Binghamton earlier this season and 19 at the position across three levels of the minor league last season.
Checkback for more updates on Mark Vientos after he left Thursday's game.
