Mark Sanchez on Sept. 17, 2023 in California
Sanchez is currently facing one felony charge (battery resulting in serious bodily injury) and three misdemeanor charges (battery resulting in bodily injury, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication that endangers the life of another).
The incident happened in downtown Indianapolis on Oct. 4 as Sanchez was in town to call the Colts game that weekend. The former Fox Sports analyst allegedly assaulted 69-year-old Perry Tole in an alley, and the ensuing fight left both men hospitalized with serious injuries.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Sanchez approached the door of Tole's box truck and began talking to the driver in an alley between the Westin and Marriott hotels. Video of the incident showed the driver walking backwards away from the former quarterback, who followed him, the Indy Star reported.
Police reportedly said, "Sanchez is seen running after [the man] and the video shows Mr. Sanchez grabbing and throwing [the man] towards the wall of the Westin," per the outlet. In court documents obtained by the outlet, the truck driver said that he thought the former quarterback was “trying to kill him” and that he stabbed Sanchez in self-defense.
Sanchez's attorney Tim Delaney revealed in a pre-trial hearing on Oct. 22 that Sanchez was "still recovering from the injuries he sustained in the medical intervention" during the incident.
Model Bobby T, the former quarterback's ex and the mother of his son Daniel, addressed the incident on Oct. 12, saying, "Sadly, none of this is surprising to me," on social media. “Now that everything is out in the open, my focus hasn't changed. I have always been concerned for [Daniel’s] safety and for what he is exposed to." she wrote.
Sanchez's family, meanwhile, shared a statement with the Indianapolis Star on Oct. 6 saying, "This has been a deeply distressing time for everyone involved."
"Mark and our family are incredibly grateful for the concern, love, and support we’ve received over the past few days," his brother, Nick Sanchez Jr., wrote on behalf of the family, adding that the former NFL quarterback is "focused on his recovery as the legal process continues."
