Mariners slugger now being considered a trade candidate due to free agency reason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
While the Seattle Mariners are sitting in first place in the American League West, they haven’t played well, and they have to feel really good about what they did in their series against the Athletics. Sweeping the once first-place Athletics, Seattle now sits in first place in the American League West.
At the same time, the season Seattle has had definitely hasn't gone as planned, as it currently sits at 28-29 as of May 27.
The Mariners were expected to be one of the top teams in the American League, but got off to a relatively slow start.
It doesn't seem likely that Seattle is in a position to sell anytime in the next few months, though there's certainly a possibility that, if it continues to play poorly and falls in the American League West standings, it could look to move on from certain guys.
One player that was recently brought up was Randy Arozarena, the soon-to-be free agent.
“Whether or not these four stars can get back on track will go a long way in determining how president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto operates. If the M's actually fall out of the race, free-agent-to-be Randy Arozarena would be one of the big-ticket bats available before the trade deadline,” Tim Kelly of BR wrote.
With how poorly the American League West has played throughout the year, as not one team is above .500, there would be no reason for the Mariners to consider selling right now.
They obviously have to hope they win the division if they continue playing at this pace, as they probably wouldn't make the wild card, but there's plenty of reason to believe Seattle will do just that.
