The Seattle Mariners have had an underwhelming season. After coming just one win short of reaching their first-ever World Series in 2025, they have spent 2026 hovering around the .500 mark.
Entering Friday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, they sit at 56-60. Not all hope is lost though, as the American League West is one of the weaker divisions in MLB and they remain within striking distance of first place.
Unfortunately, they lost another player to injury moments before first pitch on Friday. The Mariners announced on X that right-hander Cole Wilcox would be heading to the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Right-hander Nick Davila was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.
Wilcox suffered the injury during his last outing Thursday against the Detroit Tigers, an appearance where he struggled, allowing four runs to cross while recording just two outs. His ERA has ballooned to 4.00 following the outing, but before that he had been one of the more dependable relief pitchers in Seattle’s bullpen. Losing him now, at a time when the Mariners need every reliable arm available, is a huge blow.
Davila will do his best to fill the void. He has been reliable when on the big-league club this year, owning a 3.57 ERA across 20 appearances, but the underlying numbers are concerning. He has walked 11 hitters while striking out just nine at the MLB level, which is ultimately why he was back in the minor leagues.
For a bullpen that has carried Seattle through stretches of this season, losing Wilcox and replacing him with a pitcher who has shown command concerns is far from an ideal situation.
