The Washington Commanders re-signed Marcus Mariota on the first day of free agency, and Mariota discussed why he returned on Thursday.
Mariota was looking to see if anyone would give him an offer he couldn't refuse, but found his best offer was still here in Ashburn with the Commanders, working again under David Blough, and again serving as the backup to Jayden Daniels. The deal Mariota signed this week is a one-year $7 million agreement, with a maximum value of $11 million including incentives.
Why did Mariota return to the Commanders? "The situations, scenarios to me that were presented never really felt right. This feels right for me."
Mariota weighed his options, and the Commanders won out again because of Dan Quinn and Jayden Daniels. "For me personally, this is the best place to play football. The atmosphere that's created through DQ is one that I love being a part of." He added, "The sky's the limit," for Jayden Daniels.
With all the talk in the DMV that new offensive coordinator David Blough lacks experience and might be in over his head, Mariota voiced freely that he feels very differently, having worked under Blough the last two seasons. "Well, from the first time I met Blough, you could tell how smart he was and just an unbelievable person...I think Blough is a perfect fit for this."
Mariota wanted to go back out west if he could, being from Hawaii and having played his college ball at Oregon. Yet, he really thought the Washington Commanders on the East Coast is still the best place for himself. "I've been in a lot of places...this atmosphere is one I love being part of... no doubt I wanted to come back."
Turning 33 in October, Mariota knows his limits and where he best fits. Mariota expressed that seeing David Blough build his offense "was a challenge I didn't want to pass up."
