One of the most beloved Oregon Duck athletes in program history got a bit of a payday to start the week.

As NFL free agency opened up on Monday, former Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota is reportedly signing a new deal with the Washington Commanders to keep the backup QB in D.C. for at least one more season. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the deal is for one year, worth $7 million.

This will be Mariota's third year with the Commanders, all of which have been spent backing up former NFL Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels. However, due to Daniels' injury history, Mariota has seen quite a bit of the field, playing in 14 games over the past two years, eight of which he started in 2025.

Mariota has thrown for 2,059 yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in his time with the Commanders.

As a former No. 2 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2015, Mariota has unfortunately seen his career derailed by injuries and moved around a bit because of it. After spending five years with the Titans, Mariota went to Las Vegas with the Raiders for two years. He then spent a season each with the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles, before finding a home with the Commanders.

He has now been with Washington longer than any team other than the Titans.
