Manchester United are closing in on a deal to bring Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans to Old Trafford in a £35 million ($46.8 million) transfer — while a proposed move for Atalanta's Ederson has been put on hold, for now.
United have already been linked with numerous potential recruits this summer, particularly in the midfield department, as they gear up for the upcoming campaign. With Casemiro departing as a free agent and Manuel Ugarte picking up an injury during the FIFA World Cup, the Red Devils have intensified their pursuit of reinforcements in the center of the field.
Chelsea's Andrey Santos has joined the club in a deal worth up to £50 million ($66.9 million), and United have now moved swiftly to secure Tielemans from Villa, with that transfer also edging closer to completion. The Belgian international favors a switch to United despite interest from rival clubs and the offer of a contract extension from Unai Emery's side, as he prepares to bring his three-year spell at the Midlands club to a close, as per The Mirror.

The 29-year-old's contract at Villa Park runs through the summer of 2028, but a £35 million release clause has prompted United to act decisively following the conclusion of Belgium's World Cup campaign. Tielemans impressed for Belgium, whom he captained, scoring twice as they reached the quarterfinals.
Following Belgium's elimination at the hands of France last week, Tielemans departed for his summer vacation — and United's hierarchy wasted no time in making their approach. United's pursuit represents an unexpected turn, yet the player fits the profile for their current transfer model, given his extensive Premier League experience, while bringing quality and proven ability to bolster the club's midfield.
The move for Tielemans raises further questions surrounding the proposed transfer of Brazilian international and Atalanta midfielder, Ederson.
United had previously struck an agreement worth £35 million plus an additional £3.8 million ($5.1 million) to secure Ederson's signature earlier this summer, prior to his participation at the World Cup.

However, a knee problem that emerged prompted United to delay finalizing the deal, and the club has now withdrawn from completing his signing at this stage. That said, depending on developments over the next seven weeks or so, it remains a transfer United could revisit later in the summer window at a revised price.
While Ederson now appears highly unlikely to feature for Michael Carrick's side next season, Aston Villa's No. 8 will be pulling on a United shirt at Old Trafford next term.
