A formal appeal has been filed after a preliminary fight on the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano card ended in controversy Saturday.

Phumi Nkuta was ruled unconscious at the final horn of his 130-pound catchweight bout vs. Adriano Moraes at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. Immediately after referee Herb Dean called off the fight, California State Athletic Commission members, including executive director Andy Foster and referee Mike Beltran, went to the monitor as replay is available in California.

While it appeared Moraes squeezed for a few seconds after the final horn, Dean said he deemed Nkuta out prior to it sounding. As a result, Moraes was named the winner by rear-naked choke submission with one second left.

Had Dean ruled it as occurring after the final horn, the bout would've gone to the judges' scorecards. Even if all three judges scored the final round for Moraes, Nkuta would've walked away with the decision victory.

Shortly after the controversial sequence of events, Nkuta's management, Iridium Sports Agency, issued a statement via one of its agents, Lance Spaude.

Spaude said Iridium was filing an appeal, contesting the ruling that the loss of consciousness occurred before the horn.

We contest the commission’s determination that Phumi was unconscious at the end out the bout because the choke was held for a considerable time after the conclusion of the round and after the referee, Herb Dean, attempted to stop the bout.

Had the bout went to the scorecards, Phumi would have won the bout by decision. We appreciate CSAC's consideration of our appeal and look forward to a quick and fair resolution.

Dean appeared Monday on "The Ariel Helwani Show" and stood by his judgment on fight night but encouraged the appeal from Nkuta's team as he sees it as their right to do so.

Nkuta's appeal may go before the CSAC at an upcoming commission meeting, though it's unclear when. California holds public commission meetings quarterly, unlike states like Nevada, which hold them monthly.
