Manchester United continue their hunt for Champions League qualification as they face a difficult Premier League meeting with fellow European challengers Brentford on Monday.
Under Michael Carrick's steady interim leadership, the Red Devils have rocketed up the Premier League table. They sit third in the standings, level with Liverpool and Aston Villa on points but ahead on various tiebreakers. They can claim third all for themselves with a result today.
However, it promises to be a tough matchup as the Bees are also chasing a spot in Europe. Keith Andrews has them sitting ninth, level on points with Chelsea above them and Fulham below. They could vault themselves as high as sixth with a win in this match, putting themselves in a strong position for continental qualification.

Man United vs. Brentford key moments
6th min: Luke Shaw picks up an unnecessary early yellow card for barging over Kevin Schade in midfield, a completely unnecessary foul which will leave him on a knife edge the rest of the match.
2nd min: Chance, Man United! HOW HAVE MAN UNITED NOT SCORED?!?!?! Kobbie Mainoo produces one of the most sensational, stunning on-ball runs the Premier League has seen all season along, leaving multiple Brentford defenders flailing in his wake before a behind-the-back touch skips by the last man and forces Caoimhin Kelleher to come out of goal.
His final move is to touch laterally to Amad Diallo with the whole goal to shoot at, but he tries to pass it in the back of the net and has the effort deflected agonizingly wide! That Mainoo run deserved a better finish!
HIGHLIGHT:Watch Diallo chance in UK
Kickoff: The ball is rolling at Old Trafford! Manchester United can take the next step in solidifying their Champions League qualification with a win today, but Brentford are firmly in the mix for Europe as well and will know these points could be invaluable!
Lineups: The starting XI for each team has been posted! For Manchester United, Matheus Cunha is not present in the squad after picking up a groin problem just before the match. Amad Diallo starts in his place along the United attack, while Lenny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu return to take a spot on the bench.
For Brentford, there are no surprises whatsoever as the Bees have all their players expected to be fit at their disposal.
Prematch:We here at The Sporting News asked the question almost two months ago whether Michael Carrick should be considered for the permanent Manchester United managerial job. There were a lot of questions still to be answered at that time.
There still are, of course, but there have also been a lot of answers presented between then and now. The ship remains steady. Champions League qualification is very likely. The team is clicking. No, the results haven't put Man United on course for a title challenge this season, nor are they likely to next season unless things change drastically with the roster, but this is marketable improvement from the Ruben Amorim days, across a sample size that matters. That should mean something.
What will we see from Carrick today?
