Nico O’Reill was introduced at left-back by Pep Guardiola and provided two assists - Getty Images/Charlotte Wilson
And that is why he is paid the big bucks. Manchester City were 45 minutes away from their season, or at least their hopes of silverware, ending as early as late March when Pep Guardiola made what turned out to be an inspired substitution.
The goals to turn around this FA Cup quarter-final, trailing 1-0 to Bournemouth, were scored by the big signings – by Erling Haaland and the forward who replaced him when he worryingly went off injured, Omar Marmoush – but they were made in Manchester.
It was the introduction of academy product, born and raised in the north of the city, who joined the club when he was eight, Nico O’Reilly, who swung the tie. The 20-year-old replaced another big money recruit, Abdukodir Khusanov, at half-time and was used at left-back instead of midfield. And to devastating effect.
It was from there that O’Reilly, who stepped up into the first-team squad after impressing Guardiola during last summer’s pre-season tour, provided the two assists to set up a semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Wembley.
Much to City’s delight O’Reilly chose them ahead of Manchester United, who were the first club to try and sign him and has made his mark in this competition this season with his first two assists adding to three goals in three previous appearances.
It felt tough on Bournemouth, who took the lead through Evanilson’s close-range strike, after two mistakes by makeshift right-back Matheus Nunes, especially as they were missing two of their best players with Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez suspended.
They were striving to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in their 126-year history which would have felt just reward for such an outstanding campaign so far. But City had the clearest chances and Haaland, including having a penalty saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga, could have scored a hat-trick before Bournemouth struck.
The only set-back for City was Haaland appearing to turn his ankle after a challenge with Lewis Cook. Guardiola was booked by referee Stuart Attwell as he tried to get the striker substituted.
Haaland had side-footed home from O’Reilly’s run and cross to draw City level. O’Reilly then cleverly flicked the ball through to Marmoush who beat Arrizabalaga, although the shot went underneath the goalkeeper. Later Ilkay Gundogan struck the post as City pressed home their dominance.
City’s record in this competition is extraordinary. They have now won their last eight FA Cup quarter-final ties and have reached at least the semi-finals for the last seven seasons.
In a campaign when it was hoped there might be a new name on the cup there is suddenly just one team left – Crystal Palace – who have never won before with the big beast of City still in the running.

Pep Guardiola speaking to the BBC
“It was harder for them [Bournemouth]. We played an outstanding game and had incredible chances, missed a penalty. We conceded with one chance we gave away. Our approach was magnificent. Seven times in a row semi-final in the FA Cup, no team has done it and it will be difficult for any other to do what these legendary players, the new ones and the old ones, will have done.”
On seven semi-finals in a row:
“It is unbelievable. The way we competed today compared to the way we played in the first game here [in the Premier League]. I was not good enough to overcome that situation then. We were sloppy for many games and I was not able to let them realise is what they have done today. For example Brighton was a difficult game, we did not play our best but we fought. This is what had to happen”.
On what he changed at half-time:
“The first half we played with the same intensity as the second. The difference was that we played better with the ball with more composure - we were more calm. I said at half-time, we have the game in our hands.”
On whether they will appoint a new penalty taker after Haaland’s miss:
“Absolutely not. Against Brighton he scored.”
On facing Nottingham Forest in the semi-final:
“Sometimes we have lost when we have performed well. In the home game we won 3-0 so when we lose one game it looks like a disaster. It is not true. They are third in the table, they are a very good team and we are pleased to play against them in Wembley with our fans.”
07:04 PM BST
More from Keane on ITV
“Nottingham Forest are going on nicely, it is fantastic. They have had one or two breaks in terms of the cup and penalty shootouts but sometimes you need that bit of luck.
“They are more than capable of sitting in and beating Man City on the counter-attack.”
06:58 PM BST
Roy Keane on ITV
“It is a great attitude for Pep [Guardiola] to have for these domestic competitions. Some managers have wrote them off for the past few years but Pep has always taken them seriously for a guy who has won everything in the game.
“It is a great example and it is a brilliant record he has got.”
06:56 PM BST
Andoni Iraola speaking to ITV
“I think the game first half we played very well but second half the game was for them. We could not keep the same intensity level, we were not as aggressive and we were a lot more passive.
“Even with the changes, we were lacking energy, especially up front. We were not able to play at the same level we did in the first half.”
On whether Kepa should have saved Omar Marmoush’s winning goal:
“Yes probably. There is a chance but overall I do nott think we lost because of this. Overall I think we were better in the first half, we played the game we wanted to play but second half they were better and we could not affect the long possessions. We were not dangerous enough.”
On whether the injuries/suspensions in the side had a negative impact on the side today:
“Yes. It is not just the starting eleven. It gives you good options from the bench to give us the same level. I felt David Brooks, Evanilson, after 50 minutes or something - they can play but they do not play at the same intensity level, the press is not the same as before. We could not maintain that level.”
On the goals for the team for the remainder of the season:
“We need to recover quickly because we are playing in three days against Ipswich and try and win. We need to go again with the three points and improve our position.”

Pep Guardiola speaking to ITV
“We did it. Seven times in a row into the semi-finals of the FA Cup. I am sorry to tell you but this is an outstanding achievement. That means this generation of players have done this for so many years. They have come to one of the toughest away places to come because of the way they play and the intensity.
“At half time, I said to the guys, you have the game in your hands even though you are not winning. So keep going and after the impact from Nico [O’Reilly] was really, really good. Nico scored two goals against Plymouth and the impact today was outstanding. He is going to play in semi-final for sure! We are really pleased.
“Comparing the game we played in November - we came here with flip-flops, we came hare for the holiday against a team that competes. Today, we were a team and we challenged. In football you have to run. We love the FA Cup. Hopefully, we can reach the final.”

O’Reilly has been named man of the match and that feels like the right call. He has only played half the game but has made a big impact off the bench.

If anything Manchester City look more likely to go further ahead at the moment than Bournemouth equalising. Three added minutes left.
06:19 PM BST
90+2 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester City 2
Grealish is found on the left-hand side of the box and cuts inside. He probably should shoot but instead lays it off to De Bruyne, whose shot is blocked. It falls at the feet of McAtee, who must have thought he was going to score but he is denied by a smart save from Kepa.
06:18 PM BST
90+1 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester City 2
Zabarnyi makes a mistake and the ball goes over his head. Marmoush looks like he might be in on goal but he makes a mess of it.
06:17 PM BST
90 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester City 2
Manchester City are doing a good job of keeping hold of the ball. Grealish is fouled by Adams and tensions boil over again, with Adams at the centre of it and he is booked.
There will be seven added minutes.

81 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester City 2
Zabarnyi makes a mistake in the Manchester City half and the visitors come forward with a two-on-two. Gundogan and Marmoush exchange passes and they enter into the Bournemouth box but the ball goes loose, allowing the home side to clear.
06:05 PM BST
78 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester City 2
There have been a flurry of yellow cards and Kluivert is the latest recipient of one for a foul on Nunes and perhaps some dissent after it. Manchester City have a corner out on the right which initially Bournemouth deal with but the ball comes back into the far post, where Gundogan heads it back across goal but this time the hosts clear the danger.

Bournemouth were complaining in the aftermath of the goal about a handball from Bernardo Silva in the build-up but VAR deemed it accidental.

GOAL! Marmoush puts Manchester City ahead
He has only just come on but he has just put the visitors into the lead. Semenyo should get rid of the danger just outside his own box but O’Reilly picks his pocket. He then feeds a clever pass into the path of Marmoush inside the box and the Egyptian’s shot should be saved by Kepa but it goes underneath him and in. O’Reilly has made a big impact since he came on at half time.

Haaland is back on his feet and tries to continue but pretty quickly has gestured to say he is unable to continue. He goes down and Manchester City want the ball to be kicked out but Bournemouth do not oblige. Both captains Cook and De Bruyne come to blows over that and Bournemouth feel that they did not need to kick it out.
Haaland is now off and Marmoush is on in his place. Pep Guardiola has been shown a yellow card.

05:35 PM BST
GOAL! Haaland equalises for Manchester City
Haaland missed a host of chances in the first half but he does not miss this time. Pep Guardiola’s decision to bring on O’Reilly at half time has already paid dividends as the youngster drives down the left once more and picks out Haaland at the back post. The Norwegian makes no mistake and Manchester City are level.
And that’s why he is paid the big bucks. It looked like a surprising substitution when Pep Guardiola decided to bring on Nico O’Reilly and use the midfielder at left-back but it has had an immediate effect as the 20-year-old has helped create Manchester City’s equalising goal. Key to it was doing what a lot of players do not do with O’Reilly running onto Kevin de Bruyne’s pass and sprinting into the penalty area, catching out the defenders, before crossing for Erling Haaland to score.

O’Reilly is straight into the action as he makes a great run down the left. He stands up a cross from the left-hand side of the box but none of his teammates are on hand to meet it, which probably was not O’Reilly’s fault. Neither of the current Manchester City full-backs are actually full-backs.

Pep Guardiola has spent much of the first-half with his hands in his pockets staring at the ground. He is probably wondering how his side are behind in this tie given their dominance and the chances they have failed to take. It will be interesting to see if he makes any changes. He has sent Nico O’Reilly to warm up at half-time and it looks like the midfielder is coming on.

He has been outstanding so far but one of the big questions is why is Kepa not wearing a cap? The Bournemouth goalkeeper looked like he lost the flight of Kevin de Bruyne’s corner, covering his ideas with his hands, with the sun shining directly into his face as it drops in the late afternoon. He is not helped because the stands at this stadium are so low. Goalkeepers wearing caps used to be a thing. Now it is pretty rare.

Simply awful defending from Matheus Nunes. He may only be a makeshift right-back but was at fault twice as Bournemouth take the lead. What was he thinking with that terrible loose pass infield which was intercepted by Lewis Cook? And what as he doing as he allowed Justin Kluivert to beat him to David Brooks’ cross? The hosts have the lead! It all stems from Nunes giving the ball away so poorly inside his own half. Brooks then sends in a cross from the right-hand side of the box, which picks out Kluivert at the back post. His shot beats Ederson and Evanilson makes sure the ball goes across the line to give Bournemouth the lead. Manchester City could very easily have had a few goals already but they are now behind.

Another massive chance wasted by Haaland and once again it is a result of a huge Adams error. The Bournemouth midfielder tries to play a ball back to a teammate but there is too much on it, allowing Haaland to race in behind for a one-on-one. He lifts it over Kepa but cannot guide the effort on target.
The roar when Kepa Arrizabalaga saved Erling Haaland’s penalty was arguably louder than if Bournemouth had scored a goal. “Kepa, Kepa,” rings around the stadium with Andoni Iraola’s coaching staff punching the air and turning to the crowd. Pep Guardiola has insisted Manchester City players and backroom staff will not share a slice of almost £100 million should they win the Fifa Club World Cup following their disastrous season.
The Premier League champions are in a battle to qualify for the Champions League after their dramatic slump in results before Christmas, with the FA Cup the last remaining trophy they can win and a quarter-final against Bournemouth on Sunday.
After the domestic season is over they will travel to America for the expanded Club World Cup, with the revamped tournament backed by broadcasters and sponsors to ensure the winners will receive £97 million.

Tottenham and Man City must pay over £100m to sign Tyler Dibling
Southampton are ready to demand a staggering fee of more than £100 million for Tottenham and Manchester City target Tyler Dibling.
The highly rated attacking midfielder will be one of the most sought after talents in this summer’s transfer window but Southampton’s current valuation is leaving Premier League clubs frustrated.
Dibling has made only 25 appearances in the Premier League and appears certain to be sold this summer with Southampton all but relegated to the Championship. They are expecting strong interest in the summer but are prepared to adopt a hardline stance on his future, with their valuation higher than the £100 million paid by Manchester City to Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in August 2021.

Big game for Guardiola’s side
There is no doubt how important this tie is to Manchester City as well as Bournemouth. Normally at this stage in the season Pep Guardiola is juggling the demands of going for the Premier League title and the Champions League. But not this time. And so he has gone with pretty much his strongest available line up and - certainly - the most experienced with Kevin de Bruyne starting and captaining the side and with Mateo Kovacic also in the team.

“Sense of anticipation”
There is a real sense of anticipation around this tie with Bournemouth hoping to go further than they ever have done in the FA Cup and Manchester City trying to save their season with the only domestic cup they can win. Pep Guardiola has been out on the pitch for the past few minutes, deep in conversation with one of his coaching staff, enjoying the sunshine. He has now taken his seat in the away dug-out alongside his most trusted sidekick, City’s head of player support and protocol, Manel Estiarte.

‘Bournemouth attract top talents by promising to sell them... and it is working’
This summer Bournemouth expect there to be offers for Dean Huijsen. The Premier League club had hoped to get two seasons out of the 19-year-old defender, who made his debut for Spain last week, but such has been his outstanding progress that some of the biggest clubs in world football are already vying to sign him.
Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have all registered an interest in what could be a relatively straightforward deal, given there is a £50 million release clause in the six-year contract that Huijsen signed last July.
Of course, Bournemouth will try hard to keep Huijsen, but they believe he will go on to be one of the top three central defenders in world football, and eventually they will no longer be able to stand in his way.

Wembley in sight
A place in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley is at stake at the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth host Manchester City. This is the first time these sides have ever met in the FA Cup. Bournemouth, who lost 2-1 to Brentford in the Premier League in their last game before the international break, have reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for just the third time in their history, with their last appearance at this stage coming during the 2020-21 season when they lost 3-0 to Southampton. They booked their place in the quarter-finals after a penalty-shootout victory over Wolves in the fifth round. Despite being in the frame for a European place through the Premier League, their manager Andoni Iraola has stressed just how important winning the FA Cup is.
“The FA Cup is, for me, much more important than playing in Europe, it is a title,” Iraola said. “Sometimes they talk about the cup competitions as a way to get into Europe. I do not care about Europe.
“We are playing in a final, we are fighting for a title. For me, it is much more important. I think we can win it. Probably we are not the favourites, especially with the opposition we have in the quarter-finals but I think we have shown [we can win it]. We are three games away from winning it. With a good day from our players, we can beat all the teams. I think we have a chance, probably not as big as City or Aston Villa, but I think we have our chance.”

Manchester City, who drew 2-2 with Brighton in the Premier League just before the international break, have won their last seven FA Cup quarter-final ties. They beat Plymouth 3-1 in the fifth round to book their place in the quarter-finals. Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Bournemouth and their style of play.
“I would not say they are chaotic. They gave a special way of playing and it works with the players and the ideas that they have. Football would be boring if all the teams from all the different leagues played the same way. Every team plays in a specific way and they do it really well. Other teams are more direct, other teams want more crosses.”
Manchester City were FA Cup finalists last year, losing 1-2 to city rivals Manchester United in the final at Wembley last May. When these sides met on this ground in the league back in November, Bournemouth won 2-1 thanks to goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson. However Bournemouth did not win any of their first 21 games against Manchester City in all competitions.
