What begins in Cleveland, doesn’t stay in Cleveland, allegedly.
At least that’s what’s contended in the indictment of former NBA players Malik Beasley and Ed Davis, a former Cavalier, according to The Athletic.
Through nine NBA seasons, Beasley, who last played for the Detroit Pistons, made approximately $60 million, but wrecked his finances due to significant gambling losses.
Those problems came home to roost when Davis, a friend and teammate while at the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2020-21 season, loaned Beasley money. They then collaborated to fix Beasley’s performance, according to the report.
The pair allegedly fixed Beasley’s performance four times beginning with a Jan. 26, 2024 game against the Cavaliers.
At that point of the season, Beasley was averaging 11.3 points, but scored three points against the Cavs.
Other games Beasley allegedly manipulated came against the Charlotte Hornets (Feb. 27, 2024), Los Angeles Clippers (March 10) and March 21 against the Brooklyn Nets.
Others included in the indictment include Davis’ former agent Paolo Zamorano, William Brown and Robert Gorodetsky. All will face charges of sports bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, honest services fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The investigation against Beasley first came to light a year ago. His last team, the Detroit Pistons, offered him a three-year, $42 million contract only to withdraw it upon learning of the investigation.
Davis spent 12 years in the NBA including a season, 2021-22, with the Cavs.
