Making sense of a bad rehab start for Blue Jays' Shane Bieber in injury recovery originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Shane Bieber is working on a return to the Toronto Blue Jays at the MLB level.
For now, though, he's going to have to make sense of his injury return on his rehab assignment at Dunedin.
It didn't go well on Sunday, with these stats:
- 2.1 innings
- 5 earned runs
- 6 hits
- 0 walks
- 2 strikeouts
- 49 pitches
He did increase his pitch count slightly from his first rehab start, which is good.
It's also good that he didn't walk anyone.

Giving up the five runs isn't ideal, although two were allowed to score by the bullpen after Bieber exited the game.
Ideally he would've struck out another batter or two, but it's hard to know exactly what he might've been focused on in this outing.
Bieber will have more time to get up to speed. The key is that he continues to build up his pitch count and stamina.
The Blue Jays know they need Bieber, and likely as soon as possible, but they also know they can't rush him.
The last thing they need is for Bieber to get re-injured along the way back and lose him again. He's too important for the rest-of-season chances for Toronto.
In the meantime, he'll keep getting sharper while he rehabs. The Blue Jays and the entire fanbase will watch closely.
Bieber is on his way back, but he didn't have the smoothest time out on the mound this outing.
