As the 2026 MLB trade deadline approaches, the San Diego Padres continue exploring ways to strengthen their roster for another postseason push. While much of the attention has centered on pitching and bullpen help, a new MLB insider report has connected the Padres to a far more unexpected possibility involving the San Francisco Giants. If the reported scenario were to materialize, it would rank among the biggest blockbuster trades of the deadline.

The Padres are red hot going into the 2026 MLB trade deadline. San Diego sits one game out of the final Wild Card spot, winning eight of its last 10 games. However, the organization still wants to make some upgrades ahead of the deadline. In fact, an MLB insider has linked the team to a massive trade with the Giants.
San Diego has considered the idea of acquiring first baseman Rafael Devers from the Giants, as reported by the New York Post’s Joel Sherman. As of Sunday night, it is unclear if these are negotiations with San Francisco or internal considerations with president of baseball operations A.J. Preller.
In 2026, Devers has a .249 average and .797 OPS with 22 home runs and 61 runs batted in across 111 games. The 29-year-old first baseman had a very slow start to the 2026 MLB season, but he has surged as the summer progresses. Now, Devers is being involved in MLB trade rumors.
Why would Preller and the Padres front office puruse Devers, who has a contract with a $28.5 million hit through the 2033 MLB season?
Why Rafael Devers Would Fit the Padres
Devers has a major contract in San Francisco, which would scare away most organizations. However, this is Preller and San Diego we’re talking about right now. The organization is known to swing for the fences, even if it doesn’t fit the traditional mold of what front offices do in MLB.
The Giants first baseman has been on fire since the All-Star break, posting a .840 OPS. Through two games in August ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline, Devers has a 1.413 OPS. The performance has been very, very good, and San Diego would love to add his bat to the daily lineup.
More specifically, the Padres could use a batter that hits well against right-handed pitching. Devers has a 926 OPS against right-handed pitching throughout the 2026 MLB season. While the contract would be a massive deterrent in a potential trade, Devers would significantly help San Diego’s lineup against right-handed pitchers.
Can the Padres and Giants actually complete a trade for Devers? It would be a very tough challenge to complete with under 24 hours until the 2026 MLB trade deadline.

The Padres would be a great fit for Devers, but this just seems like too big of a hurdle. If the two organizations had more time to make this deal come to life, there could be a possibility. More likely than not, Devers will stay in San Francisco for the rest of the 2026 MLB season.
If San Diego wants to revisit this idea in the offseason, it would be worthwhile. The Padres eventually need to get better against right-handed pitching, and Devers would be a great addition. For now, San Diego could look for less compliciated options on the tarde market before Monday’s deadline.
Devers would make sense in San Diego, but this kind of deal seems unlikely at the 2026 MLB trade deadline.
