Paul Nebel scored a brace as Mainz beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in a Rhine-Main derby on Sunday to get a breather in their fight against Bundesliga relegation.

Nebel fired Mainz ahead in the sixth minute with the help of a deflection from defender Arthur Theate.

Frankfurt were level in the 20th from Nathaniel Brown after an initial effort from former Mainz forward Jonathan Burkardt was blocked.

Sheraldo Becker hit the post in the 84th for Mainz before Nebel drilled the winner in the 89th after Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer had saved a header from Nelson Weiper.

Mainz followed up on their 2-0 victory over Sigma Olomouc which lifted them into the Conference League quarter-finals. They rose to 11th, six points clear of the danger zone.

Frankfurt remain seventh, eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen in sixth which would guarantee European football next season. Seventh could also be enough but that depends on who wins the German Cup.

Third last St Pauli host Freiburg and Augsburg are up against top four contenders VfB Stuttgart in the other Sunday games.
