JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Johnstown Collegiate Baseball League champion Mainline Pharmacy will stand pat as the franchise begins defense of its All American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament championship next week.
General Manager Ray Peel said the team will not select any pick-up players from the two remaining JCBL teams ahead of the 81st AAABA Tournament, which begins Monday.
“We’re sticking to our policy,” Peel said Monday night. “We had to release kids (to reach the 20-player tournament roster limit). We feel it’s not in our interest to pick up players. I just made the phone calls to the kids that weren’t playing and it’s so tough.
“We believe that we signed players to represent our team. If they can’t play for us, we don’t feel it’s right for us to pick up other players.”
As the JCBL champion, Mainline Pharmacy will play the night games at Sargent’s Stadium throughout AAABA Tournament week. Local league runner-up Martella’s Pharmacy will compete in the afternoon games at the Point.
In 2025, the two JCBL mainstays made history, becoming the first Johnstown franchises to meet in a AAABA Tournament championship game. Mainline Pharmacy defeated Martella’s Pharmacy to win its second tournament crown in three years.
Martella’s Pharmacy manager Kerry Pfeil added right-handed pitcher Coy Martino to his Johnstown-2 representative’s All American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament roster Tuesday.
In reality, Martino earned the spot June 18, when the right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game in The Hill Group’s 7-1 upset victory over Martella’s Pharmacy at Sargent’s Stadium at the Point.
“We had a loss to The Hill Group and he threw a complete game,” said Pfeil, whose team finished as the Johnstown Collegiate Baseball League runner-up in both the regular season and playoffs.
In that mid-June contest, the Mount Aloysius College product from Punxsutawney struck out nine and walked one Martella’s Pharmacy batter in seven innings.
Martino threw 104 pitches, including 66 strikes.
“He came at us and challenged us with fastballs,” Pfeil said. “He had good velocity and was effective where he was placing the ball.
“When he’s on the mound, or even in the infield, outfield or batting, he wants to compete.
“He’s trying to prove against every hitter that he’s a better pitcher than they are a hitter.”
Martino struck out 12 batters against The O, and fanned 11 versus ******* Motors.
This summer, Martino threw 342/3 innings for The Hill Group. He struck out 57 and walked 25 while posting a 2.22 earned run average to share the Pete Vuckovich Award with Martella’s Pharmacy’s Mason Pfeil. Opponents batted .169 against him.
As a freshman at Mount Aloysius, Martino appeared in 39 games with 38 starts as either a position player or pitcher. He batted .254 with eight doubles and two homers.
On the mound at Mount Aloysius, Martino threw 11 innings, striking out 12 and walking 10.
Martella’s Pharmacy will play the afternoon games at Sargent’s Stadium at the Point throughout the AAABA Tournament.
