ENDWELL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – There are many times when students with disabilities don’t get to play organized sports with their classmates. Tonight, however, that was different, as Maine-Endwell and Vestal hosted a packed house game for their unified basketball teams.

“I don’t even think there are words to describe how cool it is,” said senior Andrew Wiland.

The unified basketball program allows any student a chance to represent their school and play in a semi-competitive environment that is enjoyable for anyone.

“You see all different facets of your building of your school community come together, playing a semi-competitive event,” said head coach Bill Ocker.

A ton of people showed up in the Spartans’ gym to watch the two teams compete. When it comes to the program, the goal is to provide the whole team with not only basketball knowledge, but also to create a more inclusive athletic environment. It was a great experience for everyone involved.

“It is so fun to participate in this because you gain so many friendships, and you treat everybody with some sort of respect and love for each other,” said senior Izack Miller.

It is also an event that is enjoyable for those competing.
