MADISON, S.D. (KELO) — Madison won the high school baseball state championship back in May for the first time in over 20 years. Their legion team completed the baseball sweep on Tuesday winning the Class ‘B’ Legion State Championship as well.
Madison knocked off Dakota Valley in come-from-behind fashion after falling behind 1-0 in the championship game. Fighting against a deficit, however, was nothing new for Post 25 throughout the entire tournament.
“Cardiac Kids I think is what they’ve become to be known as. But man, it’s been some stressful but very fun games. This whole tournament…Any way we can get a win I’ll take it,” Madison Head Coach Ike Kurtz said.
They won five games in five days on their way to the crown.
“This group of boys has never given up. They’ve always fought hard until the end. They’ve been playing together for years, and it started in the spring season and they never gave up on each other,” Kurtz said.
Henry Veenhof was lights out as he shut the Dakota Valley offense down. He went 6 2/3 innings, striking out 11 batters, and allowing just one earned run on a balk in the second inning.
“I was just thinking of getting ahead early. Work the count up, throw fastballs, throw strikes early and just throw offspeed when needed. But it worked out good,” Veenhof said.
Veenhof wasn’t the only one that stepped up in big moments in the championship game. Senior Cale Johnson, in a two-strike count in the bottom of the fifth inning, hit a go-ahead two-run double.
“It felt good. I didn’t have the best tournament. I had a few hits but I had some clutch hits, and I had one there that got us two runs,” Johnson said.
One of those two runs was scored thanks to a single off the bat of catcher Tregg McGillivray, who played the last month with a torn meniscus.
“I just want to be here for this family. This is a family. I’m just trying to gut it out for everybody else. I love going out there and putting my body on the line for this team and being everything I can for them. It just means a lot to me,” McGillivray said.
The win was part of a nine game win streak, fueling the title run.
“They pick each other up. Through the good and the bad times. They hold each other accountable and they go out there and play their games,” Kurtz said.
