Entering the second year of Ben Johnson's tenure with the Chicago Bears, the reigning NFC North champions, led by an ascending Caleb Williams, have high expectations to build on their success from a season ago. For the time being, though, they'll have to be careful with the status of one of their most important building blocks: Second-year receiver Luther Burden III.
Earlier this week, Burden came up awkwardly after fighting for a contested pass with a Bears defensive back during a training camp practice. Video showed Burden walking a little gingerly before heading off the field to get evaluated by an athletic trainer. As reported by Ian Rapoport, we now have confirmation that Burden's issue was a groin injury.
Honestly, given what the injury looked like, that is very good news for Chicago:
Fortunately for the Bears, Burden's groin injury does not appear to be too serious, as he will only miss a "little bit of time." Also, it happened in the dog days of August instead of the middle of the regular season in November. Still, it's clearly a soft-tissue injury the Bears will have to be careful and proactive with before sending Burden back out onto the field, even in a practice.
Expect to see Burden later this month, provided the Bears approach his injury the right way.
Jahdae Walker is listed as Burden's backup on the Bears' depth chart at the time of this writing. Walker was signed by Chicago as an undrafted free agent in 2025.
