Star guard Luka Doncic arrived in Los Angeles just three months ago via a blockbuster trade, and in the end, he played fewer than 25 games alongside fellow star LeBron James during the regular season. In sizing up the massive disappointment that the Lakers' first-round playoff ouster has brought, it's important to remember that--the two did not have much time to learn each other.

Assuming that the Lakers can tinker with the roster in the coming months, and that James will return for yet another season in 2025-26, this team should be much better positioned to contend in the Western Conference.

But along the way, Doncic will have a major decision to make. On Aug. 2 of this year, he wil be elgible for a max contract extension, and he will need to decide whether to sign a deal that could run four years and about $220 million.

Doncic, though, had a message about a potential new deal after Game 5: He has not weighed the pros and cons just yet.

"I didn’t think of it yet. I have been focused on basketball. This isn’t time to think about everything," Doncic said.

Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists in 28 games with the Lakers this season. And while his message on his contract was noncommital after Game 5, he did say he has liked his time in L.A. It's hard to imagine him not accepting a max deal from the Lakers.

"It’s been great honestly," Doncic said. "You know the way the fans accepted me has been amazing. The way the community accepted me has been amazing. I am glad I am here, I had a great couple months. I am still trying to learn everything about the city, about the team. So, just trying to process everything."
