The debate between Luka Dončić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is not slowing down anytime soon. Speaking on a recent episode of “First Things First”, reported on June 5, Wright addressed the growing narrative that Gilgeous-Alexander has surpassed Dončić following the Thunder’s championship success, while acknowledging that both superstars are among the NBA’s elite, Wright argued that Dončić remains the superior player and would have found similar, if not greater, success in the Thunder situation.
Wright’s argument centers on what he views as Dončić’s unmatched offensive ceiling. Throughout multiple seasons, the Lakers star has produced scoring and playmaking numbers rarely seen in NBA history. Even while facing criticism regarding defense and ball dominance, Dončić has continued to generate the best production regardless of roster construction.
That belief is also why Wright recently pushed back against what he called the media’s failure to properly recognize Dončić’s dominance. Earlier this year, he argued that a player averaging more than 33 points per game on a 50-win team would typically be a runaway MVP candidate based on historical precedent.
