There is no indication that the Los Angeles Lakers are trying to trade for Dallas Mavericks P.J. Washington, or that he would even be gettable for them. But plenty of people feel like he could be the final piece for them moving forward, given their need for a two-way starting wing or forward.
Washington is considered a strong defender who can guard bigger forwards as well as wings, possesses ample athleticism and is a solid complementary scorer, even though his 3-point shooting has been up and down from season to season. He also spent some time playing alongside Luka Doncic in Dallas and was on the squad that reached the 2024 NBA Finals.
Now that Doncic is unquestionably the Lakers' franchise centerpiece, it seems like, to at least a certain extent, they're looking to make moves with his happiness in mind, such as when they traded for center Walker Kessler. Via Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports, Doncic would like to play alongside Washington again.
Washington averaged 14.2 points and seven rebounds a game last year for a rebuilding Dallas team. He shot just 32.5% from 3-point range, but he was at 38.1% the previous season.
One obstacle, at least in the minds of the Lakers, could be that he has four years left on his contract, the final three years of which are at over $21 million per season. According to Khobi Price of the California Post, the forward's contract situation "isn't appealing to the Lakers."
