The Chicago White Sox are among teams rumored to be interested in Mets’ backup catcher Luis Torrens. According to a report from Jon Heyman, the Mets do not want to trade Torrens.
Torrens, who signed a two-year, $11 million extension in May, joined the Mets in 2024 after the Mets purchased his contract from the Yankees. Since then, he’s appeared in 203 Mets games, hitting .239/.297/.344. Since then, offensively he’s been worth 3.5 fWAR in that time, good for 21st in baseball, despite spending most of that time as a backup. Defensively, he’s been a very good defensive catcher, particularly adept at throwing out runners. By Fangraphs’ Defensive Runs Above Average, Torrens is the sixth best catcher in baseball over that time, behind just Patrick Bailey, Alejandro Kirk, Cal Raleigh, Austin Wells, and Dillon Dingler.
It is typically bad form to trade a player so soon after an extension, which is one of the myriad reasons the Mets would want to keep Torrens. In addition to his fine defensive play and his ability to shoot the ball to right field, Torrens handles his pitchers quite well. And, with Francisco Alvarez missing ample time with a series of injuries, Torrens give the team a solid backstop even when he goes down.
But that’s also the reason why the Mets will likely get a lot of teams asking about Torrens. He’s an affordable, team-controlled catcher who would be the envy of most teams as either a backup or, in many cases, a starter. With the general state of catching in baseball, Torrens would be a significant upgrade for teams looking to put themselves over the top at the deadline.
The Mets also do not have a catching prospect who projects to be even close to Torrens on either side of the ball. Hayden Senger has seen some playing time over the past two seasons, and is fine in a pinch, but would be a fairly major downgrade.
