The Montreal Canadiens have signed Lucas Condotta to a two-year extension. The 27-year-old forward has earned that. I remember him when he played for UMass Lowell. He was on a long development path and has played for since the tail end of the 2021-22 season.
He is Laval’s captain and has 23 points in 50 games. That’s not anything that will get him promoted immediately but he’s a good organizational player and he provides the big club depth down the middle if they need him for a period of time in the future.
According to InStat, he’s winning 59% of his puck battles. He averages 1.67 hits per game. He plays more on the penalty kill, then the power play. He’s a two-way left wing with a bit of offense. He does a lot of the dirty work that helps set up his linemates and that’s a good player to have no matter the level.
Condotta got seven games with the Canadiens this year and I’m sure he can get some fill in time as well next season. That’s what his role appears to be and NHL teams need players who can bounce up and down and help the younger players in Laval develop as well. His salary will be cap friendly too and that's a plus.
The Canadiens have a lot of cap space to lock of their own players before they hit the market so I expect to see a few more of these very soon.
