LSU women's basketball is losing an assistant coach. According to several reports, Gary Redus II will be Rutgers' next head coach after spending four years on Kim Mulkey's staff in Baton Rouge.
On3's Talia Goodman broke the news late Sunday night. Earlier in the day, Redus was reported as a top target for the job.
Redus' move continues the LSU to Rutgers pipeline. William Tate, former President of LSU, now holds the same position at Rutgers. Last year, Tate tabbed LSU deputy AD Kelli Zinn to lead the athletic department in New Brunswick.
Redus was instrumental to LSU's recruiting operation and is seen as one of the top relationship builders in the sport. In Baton Rouge, he's been key to LSU signing elite prospects like Mikaylah Williams and Grace Knox.
The ascension for Redus is a natural one. His profile has been on the rise for some time now and was named to the WBCA "Thirty Under 30" in 2020. Redus knows how to identify and acquire talent, and Rutgers is betting on Redus's recruiting skills to raise the talent level in New Jersey.
Redus has his work cut out for him. He's taking over a Rutgers program that just went 1-17 in Big Ten play and hasn't had a winning record since 2021. Rutgers hasn't won an NCAA Tournament game since 2015.
